Where Tradition Meets Progress
Inventor and designer Douglas Green established
Green Design Furniture in 1993 to explore pioneering approaches
to modern furniture design and production. His long-term
vision is guided by the belief that honorable design must
have an intelligent premise and superior craftsmanship, while
leaving a minimal environmental footprint. Our furniture
is handcrafted of sustainably harvested American black cherry
in our Portland, Maine, workshop by master woodworkers. We
continue to faithfully produce and market the unique and
novel product Doug first envisioned- authentic contemporary
furniture that is as much fine art as collectible heirlooms.

Green Design Furniture?
We are often asked "Just how 'green'
is Green Design Furniture?" Green manufacturing to
us means creating designs that endure - structurally and
artistically - to last for generations, without harming either
the environment or the people that make or use them. Our
work is done using domestically grown solid wood, logged
following sustainable forestry guidelines. Whenever possible,
our manufacturing waste products are recycled or repurposed. Learn
