We
begin with only the highest grade of black cherrywood
for each piece of Green Design Furniture. Our wood arrives in a
rough-milled state. The first stages preparation, jointing and planing,
reveal a boards character and determine its end use.
Boards are hand picked for grain and color. Sapwood (the outer layers
of the log) is trimmed away for primary surfaces. The matching of
boards when gluing up a panel for a table-top or door requires an
artistic eye and great deal of experience to consistently produce
a harmonic composition. In most production shops, boards are not
matched, and the furniture is usually stained to produce an even
color. Unfortunately, stain robs the finished product of depth and
the character that makes each board unique. The basic components
for each production run are assembled and glued together using traditional
mortise-and-tenon joinery, the strongest and most durable way to
permanently attach two pieces of wood. Up to this point, the process
resembles traditional woodworking.
We have spent the last ten years fine-tuning our methods
and technologies. Our unique manufacturing process has improved
by inventing and fabricating our own machines and production patterns.
We perform operations on wood that had never been considered possible
by furniture manufacturers. Each component is precisely machined
in a carefully choreographed series of steps. Adjustments are made
in increments of 5/1000 of an inch to achieve the perfect fit for
the sliding dovetails. After the completed pieces are sanded and
finished, they are test assembled before final inspection and signed
by the craftsman and designer. The parts are wrapped in foam and
nestled carefully in custom-made cardboard cartons. All of our shipping
cartons have been tested and approved by FedEx to insure safe delivery
to you.
